The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have played in 10 Indian Premier League IPL finals between 2008 and 2023. CSK teams since 2008 have managed to become successful at least twice in the 2010s and 2020s, unlike some misfiring franchises. Appearing in many finals has seen the Super Kings become India’s joint most successful franchise as of IPL 2023.
Let’s explore the total list of finals played by the Super Kings throughout sixteen (16) IPL seasons.
IPL 2008 – First Final and Loss
CSK made IPL history by featuring in the competition’s first-ever final in 2008 against a star-studded Rajasthan Royals (RR) side. However, the Super Kings would suffer heartbreak in this encounter as RR ran away title winers with a 3-wicket margin.
IPL 2010 – Second Final and First Title
It would take two seasons for the Chennai-based franchise to return to an IPL final; this time, they made no mistakes. The Super Kings handed a 22-run defeat to the Mumbai Indians in IPL 2010 to clinch their first title.
IPL 2011 – Third Final and Second Title
The Super Kings wasted no time to return to action in an IPL final, booking a place in the 2011 edition. CSK snatched their second title versus Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the final with a 58-run win.
IPL 2012 – Fourth Final and Second Loss
CSK fans expected their team to secure a third title in four finals at IPL 2012, but it was not to be. A determined Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) side handed CSK a 5-wicket defeat, scuttling their title hopes that season.
IPL 2013 – Fifth Final and Third Loss
The 2013 IPL season provided a perfect opportunity for the Super Kings to defeat the Mumbai Indians (MI) in another final. However, MI cricketers on the night handed down sweet revenge to CSK, defeating the Chennai franchise by 23 runs.
IPL 2015 – Sixth Final and Fourth Loss
The MI franchise would repeat their 2013 performance, defeating CSK in back-to-back finals. MI won their second title at IPL 2015, limiting the Super Kings to just two titles after six finals.
IPL 2018 – Seventh Final and Third Title
It would take three years for CSK to return to an IPL final after their last defeat against a tough MI side. CSK secured their seventh title at IPL 2018, defeating SRH by eight (8) wickets.
IPL 2019 – Eighth Final and Fifth Loss
The MI handed CSK another final defeat at IPL 2019, to bring the number of losses for Chennai’s franchise to five. It was a bitter defeat for CSK, as a single run was the difference between both sides after proceedings.
IPL 2021 – Ninth Final and Fourth Title
The Super Kings avenged their 2012 loss to the KKR with a 27-run victory. CSK’s victory in the IPL 2021 final secured a fourth title, expanding their trophy haul as a top franchise.
IPL 2023 – Tenth Final and Fifth Title
CSK had to dig deep at the IPL 2023 final to secure a 5-wicket victory over two-time finalists, the Gujarat Titans (GT).
