Most Unsuccessful Team in IPL History

The Indian Premier League (IPL) has had great sides feature in its editions since 2008; however, many teams have flattered to deceive for years. Franchises like Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Delhi Capitals (DC) are in a race to win the unwanted title of most unsuccessful team in IPL history.

Many IPL franchises have managed to secure at least one title after repeat appearances in the final. However, a handful of teams have always come up short when it mattered most. Let’s check out the list of most unsuccessful teams in IPL history and other details you should know.

Delhi Capitals (6 Playoffs, 0 Titles)

DC currently takes the cake for IPL’s most unsuccessful team after playing full seasons in the competition. The Capitals have been a mainstay franchise since IPL 2008 but have failed to secure a title for all their effort.

DC also has the worst loss percentage among franchises from the 2008 era till date (53.36% aggregate in 2023). The franchise also has one of IPL’s worst win percentages of all time (44.11%) among teams from the inaugural season.

In total, DC played 238 games across IPL 2008 to IPL 2023. The franchise won 105 games and lost 127 during their total encounters. Their best-ever finish was a runner-up spot in 2020 where they lost the title to Mumbai Indians (MI). DC has been a part of six (6) playoffs since 2008 and have not managed to take advantage of any of these opportunities all that time.

Punjab Kings (53% Loss as at IPL 2023)

The Punjab Kings (PBKS) have never won an IPL title in their history. It’s an unwanted statistic they’ll love to change, but everything has not gone according to plan for the franchise yet. PBKS’ best performance was a second-place finish in 2014. The franchise has played in two playoffs seasons since 2008, but with no success on the title front.

A string of losses across seasons has not done much to help PBKS achieve more on-field success. PBKS’s aggregate loss percentage across IPL seasons stood at 53% in 2023. A lot of work must go into preparations and on-the-field gameplay if this franchise will ever break the trophy drought.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (8 Playoffs, 3 Finals, 0 Titles)

Virat Kohli has been with Royal Challengers Bengaluru since the side began their inaugural campaign. However, his big hits and match prowess has not done much to help RCB secure a much-needed title. Several players have come and gone through RCB’s ranks with no success on the title front.

The team has several unwanted records to smash. It would be a pleasant experience for Kohli to secure an IPL title with RCB before he retires from active play.
