T20 World Cup 2024: All you need to know about Reserve Day rules

Reserve days in cricket are set aside to play knockout cricket matches after its scheduled date. These days become necessary during the semifinals and final of major tournaments like the T20 World Cup.

There is one day set aside for the first semifinal at the T20 World Cup. Another reserve day is available to accommodate any changes to the scheduled final date. However, there is no reserve day for the second semifinal. The second semifinal is on schedule to take place two days before the final.

What Happens to the Second Semifinal If There are Delays?

The second semifinal has a total allotted time of 250 minutes outside its scheduled date. Any window of 250 minutes is set aside on the day of play to accommodate changes to the second semifinal.

How are Reserve Days Implemented?

Reserve days are set aside to accommodate any unplanned events that occur at the scheduled time for specific knockout games. Weather is the most common reason why reserve days are necessary, since conditions can change quickly in The Americas.

What Happens if a Group Stage or Super Eight Match is Delayed by Bad Weather?

There are no reserve days for group games or Super Eight fixtures. However, bad weather can affect the timing of these games just as expected in other matchups. If rain or bad weather disrupts such games, both teams will have to play five (5) overs each to get a result.

What Happens If a Semifinal or Final is Abandoned?

Adverse weather conditions are unpredictable and could spoil planned fixtures for longer than normal. In such cases, there are rules for teams to progress to the final due to bad weather. The team in first or a higher position after the Super Eight will get a final berth ahead of their scheduled opponents.

Both teams will be declared co-winners of the final if rains and bad weather continue throughout reserve days.

What is the Super Over in T20 Cricket?

T20 cricket usually requires a Super Over when a match ends in a tie after twenty overs are completed. The Super Over serves as a tie-breaker, and whichever team wins it takes the game. Super Overs continue if they end in ties until there is a clear winner. Net run rate (NRR) calculations do not apply to Super Overs.
